About TBI Preservation Society

The Temple Beth Israel Preservation Society of Danielson, CT was founded in 2009 and, in 2013, was listed with the National Registry of Historic Places. Dedicated to “Honoring the Past – Enriching the Future,” TBI Preservation Society maintains a commitment to social justice and community building through a variety of interfaith programming. Temple Beth Israel was built in the 1950’s by a community of primarily Holocaust survivors who, with a handful of long-term resident Jewish families, determined to create a shared space for worship and community events. The Modernist building was designed by notable Boston architect William Riseman, in memory of his mother who, a Holocaust survivor and founding member, donated the building’s exterior stone.

By the early 21^st century, many of the Jewish families of Connecticut’s “quiet corner” had moved away, eliminating the need for a congregation at TBI. The founders’ families, however, retained a bond to their roots. In 2009, a select group of those who had grown up at TBI formed the TBI Preservation Society, dedicating themselves to using lessons of tolerance and acceptance from their own unique perspective as Holocaust survivors and children of survivors to build a stronger inter-faith community and to combat bullying in our schools.
